Valley Bank of Helena
Exterior Renovation
Helena, Montana

The goal of the directors for this local bank was to update the exterior of their existing building to present an image consistent with their banking operations. They exist within a small business community and transact business at a very personal level based on long term relationships. I suggested that the bank borrow from historical design forms brought to this area of Montana during the mining and business boom of the late 1800's. A 1970's vintage, wood shingle mansard façade was removed from above the existing windows and replaced with a glazed masonry, brick and metal coping treatment. Various forms on the building including the main entry, drive thru lanes and cash teller machines were tied together with the coping and metal panel freeze. Existing stone walls and aluminum windows remained and took on a comfortable character when viewed within the more formal language of the remodeled façade. This project was completed with the active participation of a large Image Committee. The committee met roughly 29 times to discuss every step of the schematic design, design development, projected costs and final material approvals. Community members and bank customers are comfortable with the final product. The bank directors are pleased.
